Voortrekker monument
To some, its a cheriched symbol of their nationhood and the most important
memorial in Afrikanerdom. To others a threatening monolith representing the
bad old days. But whatever way you look at it, the Voortrekker Monument is
certainly awe-inspiring in its immensity.
Its formidable 41-m-high granite bulk broods over the Pretoria skyline, a
lasting memorial to the fortitude and perseverance of the draughty pioneers
who avoided British rule in The Cape Colony by trekking into the unknown interior
between 1834 andd 1840.
