Melrose house
The peace treaty of Vereniging was signed on 31 May 1902 in the dining room
of the Melrose House in Pretoria by Lord Kitchener and Lord Milner for the
British government and ten representatives of the Boer Republics.
After the signing of the peace treaty, the country was able to assess the
cost to the economy and to plan for the future.
A new Boer leader by the name of Jan Christian Smuts, who emerged from the
war with distinction, was sent to Johannesburg to assist in rebuilding the
economy.
